BRMC Outpatient Surgery Center
New Construction
Bluefield Regional Medical Center
Bluefield, Virginia
Superintendent: Larry Pruett
Project Size: 14,000 ft²
Contract Amount: $5 million
One of Swope Construction’s more challenging projects, the 14,000 square foot Surgery Center tested the limits of time and budget constraints. Adding to the difficulty, this technologically sophisticated structure serves as the hub for BRMC’s outpatient surgical services and required placement of delicate, advanced medical equipment.
Due to limitations placed on Bluefield Regional Medical Center, the Surgery Center had only nine months for design and construction. The short construction time required Swope Construction to coordinate heavily with medical supply companies. Simultaneous purchasing, rough-in and installation of the major medical equipment left little room for inaccuracy.
Faced with these extreme time and budget constraints, Swope Construction was able to economically construct the Surgery Center with all necessary medical gas lines, vacuum pump systems, sterilization units, steam piping and a specialized computer-controlled HVAC system with rooftop units. The building is also outfitted with 4 RPZ water backflow prevention systems to ensure no contaminated material can leave the building and taint the city’s water supply.
The Surgery Center and the site have been designed for future additions. Inside the current building, there is room for two additional operating rooms. In the future, BRMC anticipates adding a professional building to the left side of the Surgery Center.
