Project Pace: What Delays?New River Valley Community Services (NRVCS) is a public organization providing behavioral therapy services for local adults, children and families. NRVCS operates from an existing 37 ,000 square foot building in downtown Blacksburg. Swope Construction, under the guidance of Jerry Hawks and Gene Bowers is in the process of constructing two new wings adding a total of 20 ,000 square feet to the existing building and will later renovate the original structure. In spite of work stoppages beyond Swope Construction’s control, the project is proceeding at an unbelievable pace. The town of Blacksburg delayed the project start three months in August of 2006 causing the project to lose the last three good weather months of the year. It was delayed a second time January to February of 2007 because existing utility lines and fiber optic cable running through the property needed to be moved. Swope Construction was given a time extension of only half of the lost construction days. The Swope team at this Blacksburg project has overcome the shortened schedule and still expects to be completed on time by the end of January 2008. All the building concrete and structural steel work has been completed. Masons have approximately 80 % of the brick work finished and the rest of the team is currently finishing up the electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. Drywall is nearly complete in the addition. Other finishes such as painting and ceiling grid are coming along well in both additions. Also, the window installation is nearly complete in the North addition. Swope Construction still has significant hurdles to overcome. We will only have access to portions of the building even when the major renovations begin as New River Valley Community Services will continue occupation. To accommodate our work, the employees and therapy sessions will continuously move throughout the building. |
